            Abstract:
The basic concept of the action of an internal bending couple in a prestressed concrete beam as compared to that in a conventional reinforced concrete beam is introduced. Using this concept, criteria for the selection of shapes and formulas for the design of sections are developed. Tables giving the deisgn constants are listed for various common beam sections. Relative advantages and disadvantages of different types of cross sections are discussed. Using the method developed, an example beam section is designed.
