Shotcreter (Wet-Mix Process)

Definition:
An ACI-certified Shotcreter (Wet-Mix Process) is an individual who has demonstrated knowledge of the wet-mix shotcrete process (via written examination) and the ability to properly place wet-mix shotcrete (via performance examination shooting a limited-size test panel). The Shotcreter (Wet-Mix Process) also possesses substantially more shotcrete work experience in actual wet-mix shotcrete field applications than a Shotcreter-in-Training (Wet-Mix Process).

An ACI-certified Shotcreter-in-Training (Wet-Mix Process) is an individual who has demonstrated knowledge of the wet-mix shotcrete process (via written examination) and the ability to properly place wet-mix shotcrete (via performance examination shooting a limited-size test panel) but possesses substantially less shotcrete work experience than an ACI-certified Shotcreter (Wet-Mix Process). Sponsoring Groups are currently offering Shotcreter-in-Training certifications for Vertical orientation.

Scope and Knowledge:

This program requires demonstration of the knowledge covered on the Job Task Analysis (JTA):

JTA for ACI Certification of Shotcreters

The JTA is a detailed list of specific points of knowledge that may be included in the examination for this ACI Certification program. ACI urges candidates to use the JTA to prepare for the certification exam.

The primary technical resource for this program is the ACI CCS-4 document, “Concrete Craftsman Series: Shotcrete for the Craftsman.”

The program requires knowledge in the following areas of shotcrete construction:

  • Basic concrete technology,
  • Shotcrete Equipment,
  • Environmental conditions and precautions,
  • Inspection and preparation of surfaces,
  • Shotcrete placement, principles, and techniques,
  • Communication,
  • Finishing and tolerance controls,
  • Safety,
  • Testing/quality, and
  • Curing.

Certification Requirements:
No specific education is required as a prerequisite for Shotcreter-in-Training or Shotcreter certification. A minimum of 25 hours of verified shotcrete work experience is a prerequisite to participate in the performance examination, and to be eligible for certification as a Shotcreter-in-Training (vertical orientation only). A minimum of 500 hours of verified shotcrete work experience is required to be eligible for full Shotcreter certification. An ACI-certified Shotcreter-in-Training may upgrade to full Shotcreter certification for the remainder of their original certification period following submission and verification of documentation reflecting 475 additional hours of shotcrete work experience.

ACI will grant certification only to those applicants who meet the following requirements:

  1. A passing grade on the ACI written examination, and
  2. Successful completion of the ACI performance examination, and
  3. Satisfaction of the work experience requirements for the level of certification sought.

The 90-minute (1-1/2 hours) written examination is closed-book and consists of 60 multiple-choice questions. A minimum score of 75% is required to pass the written examination.

The performance examination is closed-book and requires actual demonstration of your knowledge of surface preparation, equipment, start-up procedures, proper placing/nozzling technique, finishing, and curing. The examinee must place wet-mix shotcrete in the vertical position and has the option to also place wet-mix shotcrete in the overhead position.

Certification is valid for a period of five years from the date of successfully completing all requirements.

Recertification requires either successful completion of both a verbal interview and performance examination(s) (if eligible) or taking the then-current written and performance examinations in their entireties, plus additional work experience.
