Q. Would adding more cement serve the purpose of admixtures? A. In general, no. Adding more cement is effective only in cases where more cement may improve workability and reduce the w/cm, provided these improvements can be obtained to the desired degree for the same cost. Also, more cement can be effective in cold weather to raise heat of hydration. More cement will not retard the time of setting in warm weather, nor will it entrain air. Neither will it reduce the heat of hydration and temperature rise within mass concrete, as some admixtures will when they make it possible to reduce the cement content. Also, more cement with more water would result in more drying shrinkage.
