Q. What precautions need to be taken to resist acid attack? A. Concrete structures are not often used where attack by strong acids is likely. When concrete is used under conditions of exposure to strong acids, it is usually covered with an acid-resisting coating (ACI 515.2R). For mild acid attack, use a dense concrete with a low w/cm (ACI 201.2R), and perhaps add some sacrificial thickness. In cases where the exposure is infrequent, special treatment may not be needed.
