Technical Questions

ACI Committees, Membership, and Staff have answered common questions on a variety of concrete related topics.

What is involved in the process of mixture proportioning?

Q. What is involved in the process of mixture proportioning?

A. Mixture proportioning involves selecting the combination of materials from the available sources that will most economically produce concrete that will meet or exceed the requirements of the job specifications. It is possible to determine the amounts of ingredients that will meet the demands of any of the various uses of concrete. The proportions selected, however, need to be validated with trial batches using job materials to ensure that the desired fresh and hardened concrete properties will be achieved at the required levels. The basic principles and procedures for the proportioning of concrete mixtures are given in detail in the reports of ACI Committee 211.
