Q. How do the requirements of placing affect the selection of proportions of aggregates and cementitious material? A. The size and shape of a structural member and the amount and distribution of the reinforcement impose definite limits to the nominal maximum size of the coarse aggregate, and to the consistency and workability of the concrete. Consistency and workability in turn are controlled by the relative quantities of cementitious material; surface texture, size, shape, and grading of aggregates; and the amount of water. The use of air entrainment affects consistency and workability to an important degree, as does use of other chemical admixtures.
