Q. Are load tests on completed structures ever employed? A. Yes. This has long been an accepted procedure for structures where new types of construction or methods of design are proposed. This procedure is also used to resolve the issue of adequacy of a structure when cylinders and cores suggest that strength is less than intended or when a structure is considered for a new use in which higher loads than contemplated by the design may be involved. Load test procedure and the acceptance criteria are given in ACI 318. Additional information is found in ACI 437R.
