Q. What are rebound, penetration resistance, and pullout tests? A. A rebound test consists of striking a steel rod in contact with the concrete surface with a spring-propelled mass or hammer (ACI 228.1R, ASTM C805). The instrument measures the amount of rebound of the hammer. In the penetration-resistance technique, one measures the depth of penetration of a rod (probe) or a pin forced into the hardened concrete by a driver unit (ACI 228.1R, ASTM C803). The pullout test measures the maximum force required to pull an embedded metal insert with an enlarged head from a concrete specimen or structure. Inserts are either cast into the fresh concrete or post-installed into the hardened concrete (ASTM C900).
