Q. Does ACI 318-19 provide definition of shallow and deep foundations? A. ACI 318-19 does not provide a definition for shallow and deep foundations. Chapter 13 however lists the types of shallow and deep foundations. Shallow foundations include strip footings, isolated footings, combined footings, mat foundations, and grade beams. Deep foundations include pile caps, piles, drilled piers, and caissons. Examples of some of these foundation types are shown in Fig. R13.1.1 of ACI 318-19.
