Technical Questions

ACI Committees, Membership, and Staff have answered common questions on a variety of concrete related topics.

The intent of the 0.8 factor in Section 17.7.1.2.1 of ACI 318-19

Q. I am interested in the origin and reasoning behind the 0.80 factor applied to the nominal shear strength of anchors with built-up grout pads, as specified in Section 17.7.1.2.1 of ACI 318-19. What is the 0.8 factor intended for?

A. The 0.8 factor is intended to account for the additional distance between the top of concrete and the bottom of the attachment when a grout pad is present. Note that situations such as an unusually thick grout pad will require engineering judgment to determine if additional calculations are necessary.
