Temperature limits for mass concrete

Q. What are the temperature limits for mass concrete?

A. According to ACI 301 “Specifications for Concrete Construction”, the following temperature limits shall apply for mass concrete placements:

  • Maximum temperature in concrete after placement shall not exceed 160°F (70°C).
  • Maximum temperature difference between center and surface of placement shall not exceed 35°F (19°C).

The maximum temperature limit of 160°F (70°C) exists to prevent delayed ettringite attack (DEF), while the maximum temperature difference limit of 35°F (19°C) exists to prevent thermal cracking.
