Q. What are the temperature limits for mass concrete? A. According to ACI 301 “Specifications for Concrete Construction”, the following temperature limits shall apply for mass concrete placements: Maximum temperature in concrete after placement shall not exceed 160°F (70°C). Maximum temperature difference between center and surface of placement shall not exceed 35°F (19°C). The maximum temperature limit of 160°F (70°C) exists to prevent delayed ettringite attack (DEF), while the maximum temperature difference limit of 35°F (19°C) exists to prevent thermal cracking.
