Technical Questions

ACI Committees, Membership, and Staff have answered common questions on a variety of concrete related topics.

Why are fibers used in concrete?

Q. Why are fibers used in concrete?

A. The primary purpose of using fibers as reinforcement in concrete is to enhance its mechanical properties. Synthetic microfibers are typically used to control cracking caused by plastic shrinkage and settlement, while most other types of fibers are used to improve the concrete’s hardened properties. When the appropriate fiber type and dosage are used, fiber reinforcement can increase the concrete's toughness, minimize crack formation, enhance impact resistance, and provide additional strength in post-cracking stages. The choice of fiber type, its geometry, and dosage depends on the specific application and the desired properties of the concrete. By uniformly distributing these fibers throughout the concrete, a more isotropic reinforcement is achieved, leading to improved performance in various structural applications.
