Technical Questions

ACI Committees, Membership, and Staff have answered common questions on a variety of concrete related topics.

What properties of concrete are enhanced by the addition of fiber?

Q. What properties of concrete are enhanced by the addition of fiber?

A. The addition of fibers to concrete enhances several properties in both its fresh and hardened states. Fibers improve the ductility of concrete, providing post-cracking strength and significantly increasing its toughness under various types of loads, including compression, tension, flexure, and impact. The fibers become engaged as soon as cracks form, arresting crack propagation and enhancing the overall performance of the concrete.
