Register Now » The ACI Virtual Concrete Convention – known as the world’s gathering place for advancing concrete – will be held virtually from March 28-April 1, 2021, and will feature 45 total sessions. All attendees will be provided the opportunity to advance their knowledge and earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs)/Professional Development Hours (PDHs). The featured session titled Legal Issues in Concrete Construction – Lessons Learned is moderated by ACI President Jeffrey W. Coleman, and will bring together individuals with extensive experience in litigation related to concrete construction to share their experiences as lawyers, expert witnesses, and engineers. This featured session is sponsored by Advancing Organizational Excellence (AOE). Session Speakers: Jeffrey W. Coleman ACI President Jeffrey W. Coleman, PE, FACI, is an attorney that focuses his practice on construction law, professional liability defense, concrete construction and general business law, including insurance and coverage. Mr. Coleman has been a licensed structural engineer since 1977 and a practicing attorney since 1984. Nationally known for his knowledge and experience in the area of concrete construction, Coleman has represented design professionals in all matters of their business, including defense of multimillion-dollar design defect and negligent construction administration claims. He is the only attorney who has been named a Fellow of the American Concrete Institute (FACI). Randall W. Poston ACI Past President Randall W. Poston, Ph.D., P.E., S.E., NAE is an internationally recognized expert in structural engineering and inductee to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), Dr. Poston has established himself as one of the preeminent structural consultants in the United States. Dr. Poston has authored and delivered hundreds of papers and presentations related to the structural engineering industry and championed the repair of existing structures for upwards of 30 years. He readily relates that he has never met a structure that cannot be repaired and has dedicated his career to advancing the state of structural engineering knowledge. William E. Rushing Jr. ACI Past President William E. Rushing Jr., FACI, is a Vice President with Waldemar S. Nelson & Co., Inc. He is the lead structural engineer for design of numerous industrial and marine facilities, including container marshalling yards, chemical plants, oil storage terminals, oil and gas production facilities, bulk storage facilities, and hard rock mine ore processing facilities in Indonesia. Rushing has chaired numerous ACI national and Louisiana chapter committees, including the ACI Strategic Plan Drafting Task Group, the Task Group on Managing Translations of ACI Products and Services, the ETC Product Development Committee, the ACI Financial Advisory Committee, and many technical committees. Matthew D. D’Ambrosia Matthew D. D’Ambrosia, PhD, PE, FACI is Principal and Co-Founder of MJ2 Consulting where he specializes in solving difficult problems for the construction industry. Dr. D’Ambrosia has over 20 years of experience in concrete materials behavior and research. His interests include materials optimization for specialized applications, durability-related mechanisms such as volume change and cracking, as well as new approaches for prediction and verification of service life and sustainability. He has expertise with large infrastructure projects throughout the world, such as tall buildings, bridges, highways, dams, and power plants. He is a Licensed Professional Engineer in thirteen states. Learning Objectives: (1) Review best practices on dealing with project documentation; (2) Describe the role technical experts played in the resolution of the litigation; (3) Recognize pitfalls where concrete materials requirements and constructability issues can contribute significant risk to a project; (4) Identify the three C’s (clear, concise, and coordinated) of specifications; (5) Discuss how to manage project emails (what not to include).
