As we approach the end of the year, many of us will also be approaching the season of giving when we give to family members and those who have helped us along the way. I've had many helpers and mentors over my professional career and many of them were associated with ACI. Some of them were leaders—Presidents and Committee Chairs—and some of them were regular attendees at ACI conventions—fellow committee members, colleagues, and staff. All of them are good friends and I owe a debt of gratitude to them and the organization that brought us together. So, as we approach the end of the year, and for some of us approaching the later years of our professional careers, it is appropriate to reflect and consider how we can give back to the organization that has helped to shape us. I know that many of you have generously given of your time and wisdom to ACI in the creation of world-class design guides, codes, and standards. For those efforts, all of us who are a part of ACI are eternally grateful. However, ACI has many options for members and friends of the Institute to give financial gifts that will ensure opportunities for other ACI members to grow and contribute on a technical level, as you have done. One of the most common types of giving is for ACI student scholarships and graduate fellowships. Each year, ACI awards up to six $3000 scholarships to both undergraduate and graduate students. These awards are applied directly toward tuition. All students, whether in the United States or international, are eligible as long as they are enrolled as full-time students at an accredited university. Up to eight fellowships are awarded annually and are valued at $7000 to $10,000, which can be applied toward tuition, books, or living expenses. Some of the fellowships involve a summer internship intended to give students practical experience with a firm involved in concrete design and construction projects. All of the fellowships include reimbursement of travel expenses and registration fees for two ACI conventions. Imagine the impact we would have if only 10% of the ACI membership made a financial contribution to ACI's student awards. Giving for scholarships or fellowships is easy and starts at the "Students" tab at the top of the ACI home page. Hovering over that tab opens a pull-down menu from which you can select "Donate to Fellowships/Scholarships." Clicking the "Donate” button puts you on the webpage for donations to student scholarships and fellowships through the ACI Foundation. The page also has contact information if you want to make a larger contribution and establish a scholarship or fellowship in your name. Based on current market rates, a gift of $30,000 is required to establish a student scholarship and a contribution of $75,000 is required to establish a fellowship. Gifts can be made by individuals, families, companies, or an organized group of ACI members. Another convenient way to access giving opportunities is directly through the ACI Foundation website, which can be reached from the ACI home page. In addition to the scholarship and fellowship funds already mentioned, gifts can be given to the Concrete Research Council, the Strategic Development Council, the Innovative Concrete Education program, and the Concrete Legacy Society. Short descriptions of each of these organizations and their missions, as well as contact information for making individual or organizational gifts, are available on the website. Gift planning guides and donation tools are also available to help in planning your gift to ACI. The Concrete Legacy Society consists of individuals who are passionate about the concrete industry and want to ensure through bequest-type gifts that future generations will have access to continued advancements in concrete knowledge. Concrete Legacy Society donors can make planned gifts to ACI, the ACI Foundation, or the specific programs previously noted, providing donors with options to customize a gift to meet their interests and charitable preferences. Clearly, we all have many opportunities for giving to important organizations and causes. As you consider your options, please do not forget the technical organization that has played a major role in shaping your career and that of many others. James K.
