On Sunday, October 20, 2013, the American Concrete Institute (ACI) will present six awards and will deliver the next presentation of the Katharine and Bryant Mather Commemorative Lecture Series during the ACI Fall 2013 Convention Opening Session. The Arthur J. Boase Award, presented by the ACI Foundation Concrete Research Council for outstanding activities and achievements in the field of reinforced concrete, will be presented to David Darwin, FACI, in recognition of his significant research work with reinforcing steel and with concrete cracking and for his many contributions to the technical work of ACI and the industry. The Robert E. Philleo Award, also presented by the ACI Foundation Concrete Research Council will recognize Robert Douglas Hooton, Professor at the University of Toronto, for exemplary teaching, research and service to the profession in the areas of durability of concrete, properties of concrete-making materials, and preparation of standards and specifications. The Jean-Claude Roumain Innovation in Concrete Award, established in 2010, will be presented to Kevin A. MacDonald, Principal Engineer at Beton Consulting Engineers LLC, in recognition of his tireless service to the concrete industry and his innovative work to increase the use and understanding of recycled aggregates and supplementary cementitious materials for creating sustainable concrete mixtures with low embodied energy and reduced carbon footprints The Concrete Sustainability Award is presented to individuals or teams who have actively highlighted concrete’s role in sustainable construction. Aris Papadopoulos, CEO of Titan America, will receive this award for his unprecedented and exemplary leadership in unifying the concrete industry in North America in developing a common direction on concrete sustainability and his international pioneering efforts on sustainability and resilience of concrete The Distinguished Achievement Award was established in 2004 by ACI’s Board of Direction to recognize nonmember individuals or associations who have made notable contributions to the advancement of the concrete industry through their support of concrete utilization. Hensel Phelps will receive this award, recognizing their leadership in the advancement of the sustainable use of concrete through innovation and efficient use of local resources The ACI Young Professional Essay Contest Award, sponsored by ACI Young Professional Activities Committee (S-806), recognizes Karla Kruse, engineer at Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc., as a young professional in the concrete- or construction-related industry who best answered the question “How has learning concrete design, manufacturing, or construction principles affected your long-term career interests?” Following the awards presentation H. Celik Ozyildirim, Principal Research Scientist at the Virginia Center for Transportation Innovation and Research (VCTIR), will deliver the next presentation for the ACI Commemorative Lecture Series, established to commemorate prominent deceased ACI members. This address, titled Katharine and Bryant Mather: Pioneers and Visionaries, will touch on the couple’s interests and influences to the concrete professional community, as well as the various VDOT applications that were adopted from their teachings The ACI Fall 2013 Convention will be held at the Hyatt Regency and Phoenix Convention Center October 20-24. Reduced hotel room rates are available at the Hyatt Regency and Renaissance Hotel until September 27th based on availability.
