The American Concrete Institute is honored to welcome Gordon Clark to the ACI Spring 2014 Convention in Reno, NV, USA, as the International Lunch Guest Speaker. Clark will present his vision on Making Our Concrete Structures Last Longer – A Global Challenge that will explore how one could approach the design of new concrete structures and the repair of old ones to achieve endurance through the 21st century and beyond. The presentation will reference examples of both buildings and bridges—recent and old—and touch on lessons from the past, designing for durability, designing for sustainability, influence of research and standards, and new materials and innovations. Lecturing widely and publishing many papers on bridges and other built structures, Clark has made a major contribution to the advance of technical knowledge and standards throughout the industry—especially in the field of post-tensioning. Clark is President of the International Federation for Structural Concrete (fib) for 2013-2014; Chairman of the British Standards Structural Concrete Committee; and is a non-executive Board member of CARES, the Certification Authority for Reinforcing Steels. Clark is also a Director at Ramboll and is past Chairman of the independent engineering consultant Gifford. He joined the consultancy in 1976 and was appointed a Director in 1992. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Institution of Structural Engineers. Clark’s career as a leading bridge designer included Project Director for the award-winning Gateshead Millennium Bridge and the Golden Jubilee Footbridges over the Thames.
