ACI’s Certification Department has introduced two new masonry-related certification programs: the Masonry Field Testing Technician and the Masonry Laboratory Testing Technician. Developed by ACI Subcommittee C601-C, Masonry Testing Technicians, the programs provide certification to those technicians working in the laboratory or in the field who can demonstrate technical knowledge and skills for sampling and testing of masonry units, mortars, grout, and prisms. The programs are based on content from ASTM specifications. < Most masonry structures require inspection—including testing of units, mortar, grout, and other related materials. Testing personnel need to be as familiar with methods for masonry as with other concrete products (such as ready-mixed concrete) thereby increasing correct testing, valid results, and job-site solutions. Both new programs have the support of The Masonry Society, the National Concrete Masonry Association, and the Portland Cement Association, and representatives from these associations played key roles in helping develop the programs. The Masonry Society will be a National Sponsor for this program. For the masonry industry, implementation of testing certifications is vital. “Developing these programs filled an important need within the testing and inspection community,” said Chris Robinson, Chair of ACI Committee C670, Masonry Technician Certification. ACI is encouraging its certification sponsoring groups to conduct the new programs. “ACI’s sponsoring group coverage enables ACI to bring these new programs to market in an efficient and effective manner,” said John Nehasil, ACI Managing Director of Certification & Chapters. The Masonry Society is also available to help any sponsoring group that is interested in offering the Masonry Testing Technician programs. Certification continues to be an important and required part of the construction industry – demonstrating to employers and clients that staff are knowledgeable in a particular area and that a reputable organization is willing to attest to their skill set. Concrete International Magazine article: ACI Adds Masonry Testing Technician Certification ACI is committed to increasing opportunities for professional growth, strengthening relationships between ACI and its chapter members, and engaging constituents interested in certification.
