A reminder of ACI’s global inclusiveness was in evidence at the International Forum on Sunday, April 12, 2015 at The Concrete Convention and Exposition in Kansas City, MO. David Millar, of the Concrete Institute of Australia captured the aim of the all international concrete institutions present at the forum – “bringing the world of concrete to our members.” Exposition attendees from around the world gathered to meet and learn from ACI international partners, ACI chapter representatives, and ACI leadership about worldwide events, activities, initiatives, and common themes of interest to the concrete materials, design, and construction industry. The popular forum provides a great opportunity to share information on their organization’s activities and plans, and provides networking opportunities among ACI Members, Chapter Representatives, ACI Leaders, and ACI International Partners. Attendees have an opportunity to learn about other international organizations – their activities, upcoming publications and events, and how ACI is working with its International Partners in a common pursuit of advancing concrete knowledge. Chapters giving presentations included: Concrete Institute of Australia—David Millar ACI Guatemala Chapter—Xiomara Sapon ACI India Chapter—Ishita Manjrekar & Dr. Surendra K. Manjrekar ACI Northeast Mexico Chapter—Alejandro Duran-Herrera & Francisco Anguiano Civil Engineering Committee of the Polish Academy of Science—Prof. Maria Kaszynska ACI China Chapter—Prof. Li Zongiin Japan Concrete Institute—Dr. Hitoshi Shiohara RILEM—Dr. Kamal H. Khayat Chapter representatives shared updates on upcoming conferences, spreading the word about international outreach through ACI’s Chapters Highlights of the presentations: The Concrete Institute of Australia shared information about the Global Climate Change Institute building, University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia, which is the first global use of geopolymer concrete for structural concrete, and also discussed the Institute’s aim to become more engaged with their international partners. ACI Guatemala Chapter discussed their commitment to continuing to promote ACI Certification for students in 2015, and their aim to introduce other certification programs in Spanish. RILEM focused on joint ACI/RILEM workshops and technical committee cooperation, as well as the different methods they use to disseminate information. ACI North-East Mexico Chapter discussed the formation of the association, and the cooperation between the ACI Chapter and Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon. Japan Concrete Institute discussed their history and major achievements. The Polish Academy of Science focused on their history, the ACI delegation that visited Poland in 2014, and the upcoming Conference on Structural Failures, - West Pomeranian University of Technology, Szczecin, Poland, May 20-23, 2015. ACI India Chapter discussed international conferences, successes in 2014, and the upcoming 2nd R.N. Raikar Memorial Conference, in Mumbai, India, December 18 & 19th 2015. The Forum was followed by a lunch presentation by Prof. Dr. Yilmaz Akkaya of Istanbul Technical University titled "Crossing the Bosphorus in Istanbul: Bridges, Tunnels, and a lot of Concrete." Construction of the Marmaray Project, which includes the world’s deepest immerse tube tunnel was discussed, as well as the two story highway Avrasya Tunnel. ACI maintains its relationship with the international concrete community through participation in international events, active and influential International Chapters, and collaboration with International Partners. ACI's International committees serve as a guiding voice to keep international activities and concerns at the forefront of ACI's strategic goals. There is a global need for translations, and ACI is committed to making this information available to everyone. Organizations across the globe are reaching out to ACI as a partner in efforts to develop and share concrete information and technology exchanges so the entire concrete community can benefit. ACI actively pursues development of official translations to best serve our members, chapter members, and the global concrete community. The International Forum, and other international initiatives by ACI aligns with ACI’s strategic plan objective to seek opportunities to advance national and global outreach, and positively impact the global community through mutually beneficial alliances.
