President's Memo Guest Author Michael Paul - Chair International Project Awards Committee I am happy to report that the judging has been completed for the inaugural ACI Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards. The International Project Awards Committee (IPAC) has worked tirelessly to make this program truly outstanding. The members of the Judging and Entries Subcommittees are to be thanked for their tremendous efforts in designing the process and establishing the procedures for this awards program. The award was established by the ACI Board of Direction to recognize the most creative design visions and highlight the use of the newest technology in some of the most significant projects the concrete industry has to offer worldwide. A broad representation of the global network of ACI chapters, along with some of ACI's international partners, submitted entries for consideration in our newly instituted program to acknowledge excellence and innovation in design and construction. Projects that won an award in a local chapter's awards program were eligible to participate in the global competition. Each chapter could sponsor up to two entries. Chapters that do not yet have a project awards program could also submit an entry, after a review and endorsement. Entries could be submitted in one of six categories: low-rise buildings; high-rise buildings; flatwork; infrastructure; decorative concrete; and repair/restoration. What you can expect at the Gala Celebration As I mentioned at the start, the judging has been finalized. However, I can't reveal the winners just yet. ACI will announce the winning projects Monday night, November 9, 2015, at the Gala Celebration during The ACI Concrete Convention and Exposition in Denver, CO, at the Sheraton Denver Downtown. With this being the main event in the concrete industry, it is a must to attend. A high-energy celebration is being planned, with George Seegebrecht, FACI, Concrete Consulting Engineers, LLC, serving as the Master of Ceremonies. The evening's festivities will begin with a ticketed dinner, for which the attire is business formal; cocktail dresses and suits will be appropriate. Following the dinner, awards will be presented to the winners by category as a video shows highlights of the projects. All of that will segue into the conclusion of the event—the announcement of the overall best project from among the first-place winner in the Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards categories. A post-event reception—free to all convention attendees—will provide an opportunity to congratulate the award winners. A concrete artist has received a commission from ACI to design and create a contemporary-style award from concrete and glass, which will be customized for each category winner and the overall best project. Get your tickets now Gala tickets can be purchased from the ACI store by searching "Gala" at the store home page, www.concrete.org/store.aspx. ACI members registering for the convention can purchase Gala tickets as an event with their convention registration at www.aciconvention.org. Preparing for the second Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards The ACI Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards program is an initiative that relates to several goals of ACI's Strategic Plan, including engagement with members, chapter members, and customers, while celebrating ACI's legacy and inspiring the next generation. This month, a Chapter Awards Guide will be posted online. It will serve as an interactive resource for chapters looking to start a local area awards program. We thank the members of the Guide and Gala subcommittees for their efforts as well. To build on the success of the inaugural program, a call for entries for the next Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards is expected to be issued at The ACI Concrete Convention–Fall 2015. The deadline for entries is slated to be February 15, 2016. Visit www.ACIExcellence.org for further updates. And please join us for the Gala Celebration in Denver, CO, on November 9.
