Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations, Marseille, France The American Concrete Institute Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards have been the subject of great excitement in the concrete industry for many months now, and on the evening of Monday, November 9, 2015, the highest “Excellence” award was presented to MuCEM: Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations located in Marseille, France. The project was submitted by the ACI Paris Chapter. Nine additional global projects were recognized during the packed Gala event at The Concrete Convention and Exposition, in Denver, CO, USA. The awards were created to honor the visions of the most creative projects in the concrete industry, while providing a platform to recognize concrete innovation, technology, and excellence across the globe. In order to be eligible for participation in the Excellence Awards, projects needed to be winners at a local Chapter level and submitted by that Chapter, or chosen by one of ACI’s International Partners. Guests heard ACI President Sharon L. Wood recognize the best of the best in concrete construction from across the globe. “I congratulate all the project teams and thank them for providing us this opportunity to showcase projects that are at the forefront of innovation and technology within the concrete industry,” said Wood. “I also would like to acknowledge all of the entrants – each project is worthy of recognition.” Wood also encouraged the audience to use the award-winning projects to excite the students who will become tomorrow’s leaders of the concrete industry. During the Gala’s program, ACI Past President Anne M. Elllis noted that "the Institute is such an intellectually rich place thanks to the technical, professional and geographic diversity of our membership. Tonight we will once again be reminded of this richness as we celebrate excellence in concrete construction.” In addition to the highest honor, the “Excellence Award,” which was presented to the MuCEM: Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations located in Marseille, France, additional global projects recognized during the Gala include: Low-Rise Buildings 1st Place: MuCEM: Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations in Marseille, France, submitted by the Paris Chapter 2nd Place: Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and Northwest Louisiana History Museum in Natchitoches, LA, submitted by the Louisiana Chapter High-Rise Buildings 1st Place: Al Hamra Business Tower in Kuwait City, Kuwait, submitted by the Kuwait Chapter Honorable Mention: Tower One – World Trade Center New York City, NY, submitted by the Concrete Industry Board, an ACI New York City Chapter Honorable Mention: Adobe Corporate Campus - Phase 1 in Lehi, UT, submitted by the Intermountain Chapter Infrastructure 1st Place: Cable-stayed Foot Bridge in Celakovice, Czech Republic, submitted by the Czech Concrete Society 2nd Place: Interstate 5 Willamette River Bridge Project in Eugene, OR, submitted by the Oregon Chapter Decorative Concrete 1st Place: Jean Bouin Stadium in Paris, France, submitted by the Paris Chapter 2nd Place: Downtown Doral Park Pavilion in Doral, FL, submitted by the South Florida Chapter Repair & Restoration 1st Place: Mission Bridge Seismic Retrofit in Abbotsford, BC, Canada, submitted by the British Columbia Chapter The winning projects were selected from among several possible categories.
