Concrete industry professionals had multiple choices on Contractors’ Day at the Concrete Convention and Exposition in Denver, CO, USA, November 10, 2015. Contractors’ Day is a popular destination for general contractors, project managers, and concrete industry professionals, featuring sessions, a lunch presentation, and an evening networking event. Experts shared their knowledge with attendees as part of a well-attended Contractors’ Day Session titled “Constructability.” Presenters noted that for contractors, constructability essentially refers to the extent to which the design of the structure facilitates the ease of construction. As projects become more complex and expensive and the window of construction shrinks, constructability becomes more critical to ensure a successful project. Attendees heard about constructability topics affecting day-to-day operations, schedules, and profits, including: Recommended Approaches to Constructability Sustainable Design Requirements Optimizing Mixture Designs Dealing with Cold Weather Concreting Construction Tolerances Reinforcement Congestion. The session included information on how Contractors can overcome constructability challenges on every job, and industry solutions. Presentations included: Constructability from Within Resolving the Conflict between Sustainable Design Requirements and Constructability Mix Design and Constructability-Strength is the Easy Part Winter Sports, Winter Risks, Winter Concrete Tolerances versus Constructability Handling Reinforcement Congestion Attendees enjoyed a lunch presentation by Jeff Evans, World Class Adventurer and Mountaineering Guide, titled “Mountain Vision: Lessons Beyond the Summit.” Jeff guided blind climber Erik Weihenmayer on mountains and adventure races around the world, culminating with a summit of Mt. Everest. Evans compared these events in terms of creating vision, accepting adversity, leadership, commitment, and teamwork. Other sessions included A Performance Based Approach to Hot Weather Concreting; Self Consolidating Concrete Ready Mixed Concrete Applications; and Seismic Design of Segmental and Innovative Bridges. In addition to the sessions, there were tours of the Bureau of Reclamation, and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. To round off the day, Contractors’ Day attendees joined over 1600 other concrete professionals at the Concrete Mixer for an evening of entertainment, great food, and beverages.
