The American Concrete Institute’s seminar on ACI 318-14: "Reorganized for Design" held on March 3, 2016, in Dubai, UAE, proved to be a great success with attendees. Sponsored by Advanced Construction Technology Services, (ACTS), the one-day seminar covered the overall organizational philosophy of the new 318-14 Building Code, and the various technical changes. A thorough review of the Code’s outline and provisions in the major chapters was presented to give attendees new insight into the background behind the new organizational structure and how the new organization makes it easier to find needed requirements. The 2015 International Building Code references 318-14. “ACI’s 318 code is one of the most essential and valuable standards with respect to the design of reinforced concrete structures,” stated Khaled Nahlawi, Ph.D., P.E., ACI Senior Engineer and seminar co-presenter. “Attendees to the seminar were able to get acquainted with the new organization and various technical changes, and were instructed how to ensure that a design fully complies with the new code requirements. Since the 318 code is widely used in the region, attendees specifically noted that the seminar was timely and extremely beneficial.” The United States and more than 22 countries around the world base their national building codes on all or part of ACI 318. Used globally, ACI 318 is translated into several languages and is available in both U.S. customary and metric units. With the Gulf region experiencing rapid construction growth, the use of ACI 318 has been increasing. As a recognized leader in advancing concrete as a solution to society’s needs, the American Concrete Institute is committed to disseminating knowledge to ensure customers are equipped to sustainably address the needs of a changing world.
