The fourth installment of the Richard D. Stehly Memorial Hockey Game took place as American Concrete Institute members and staff skated to honor the late former ACI President and raise funds for the Richard D. Stehly Memorial Scholarship. The Scholarship is offered through the ACI Foundation which is a non-profit subsidiary of ACI. All ACI Foundation student award information can be found here. Richard (Dick) Stehly had been member of ACI since 1980 and was elected president in 2010. Dick believed that attracting and educating ACI’s youngest members was crucial for both the future of the concrete industry and ACI. His conviction for investing in ACI’s posterity even lead him to bequest a portion of his estate to fund future ACI scholarships and fellowships. Dr. Larry Sutter, an ACI member and professor at Michigan Technological University, was the chief organizer for this year’s game. “The best way to honor Dick would be to strap on our skates and raise money for ACI’s student members,” stated Sutter when asked about the late president. Sutter hopes that the Richard D. Stehly Memorial Hockey Game becomes an annual ACI convention institution with an expanding format allowing for even more skaters and more funds to be raised for the ACI Foundation. This year’s game was a close contest with the Green Team edging out Gold by a score of 6-5. Each team featured ten skaters and a goalie for a total of 22 participants. The Green team may have skated away with the Stehly Cup but, the game was enjoyed by all participants. The next edition of the Richard D. Stehly Memorial Hockey Game is projected for ACI’s 2017 Spring Convention in Detroit. The Richard D. Stehly Scholarship is awarded through the ACI Foundation to an outstanding student enrolled in an undergrad degree program studying concrete with an emphasis on structural design, materials, or construction. The ACI Foundation was established to promote progress, innovation, and collaboration through research scholarships like the Richard D. Stehly Memorial Scholarship. More information about the ACI Foundation can be found here.
