Reunion del Concreto 2016 took place recently at The Asociación Colombiana de Productores de Concreto (ASOCRETO) in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. Delegates from more than 15 countries gathered for discussions, seminars, and special events, including a seminar on ACI 318-14: Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete and Commentary. ACI President Michael J. Schneider attended the event and talked about the first meeting of ACI Latin America Chapters. He also gave presentations on the complex construction of the Miami Science Museum and construction safety issues, as well as the history and value of ACI Certification. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) meeting was held concurrently with Reunion del Concreto 2016, and President Schneider spoke at this meeting also. Patricia & Phillip Frost Museum of Science in Miami, FL, USA Roberto Stark, FACI, and a Director on the ACI Board of Direction, spoke specifically on ACI Certification in Latin America. Antonio Nanni, also a Director on the ACI Board of Direction, gave a presentation titled, “Precast Concrete Elements with Carbon Fiber Tendons: A Bridge Case Study.” Several ACI Past Presidents were also at the event. James Wight gave a presentation on improving the education of engineers, Luis Garcia provided several updates on ACI 318, and José Izquierdo Encarnación spoke on ACI 318’s earthquake-resistant structural walls. Kimberly Kayler, Director, ACI Board of Direction, hosted the Women in Concrete Alliance Forum, held in conjunction with Reunion del Concreto 2016. The alliance is a networking organization for women in the concrete industry, that focuses on increasing the percentage of women in the concrete industry, encourages opportunities for women in leadership, fosters organizations that embrace diversity, and challenges the concrete industry to mentor and sponsor women. High-level participation in international events such as Reunion del Concreto 2016 reflects and supports ACI’s strategic plan to positively impact the global concrete community through mutually beneficial alliances, and provide leadership to ensure our customers are equipped to sustainably address the needs of a changing world.
