ACI leadership recently traveled through a number of South-East Asian countries to further ACI’s strategic plan to actively seek opportunities to advance national and global outreach. ACI President Michael J. Schneider and ACI Executive Vice President Ron Burg visited the ACI Philippines chapter in Manila to discuss the chapter’s progress and events. President Schneider spoke about the importance of chapters in a recent President’s Memo: “The local ACI chapter is the initial ACI experience for many of our members. Many in the Institute consider local chapters as the roots of ACI. The local chapters are independent organizations that follow guidelines for chapter operations established by ACI. The chapter is where "the rubber meets the road." In other words, most chapter members are deeply involved with the local concrete construction community and are often the instructors and examiners for various concrete certification programs.” Vietnam government representatives focus on increased cooperation with ACI ACI’s Director of International Business, Bernie Pekor, also met with concrete industry representatives in China, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar. Discussion centered around future education opportunities, technical activities, document exchange, and mutual learning through cooperation. In Vietnam, Memorandums of Understanding were signed with The National University of Civil Engineering; Ministry of Construction; and the Vietnam Institute for Building Science and Technology. The purpose of the MOUs is to focus on future education opportunities, technical activities, document exchange, and collaborating to improve concrete technology and safety in Vietnam. In Thailand, an International Partnership Agreement was signed with the Thailand Concrete Association. This new agreement formalizes the desire to collaboratively develop and disseminate information on concrete and concrete structures. International Partners work with ACI to increase access to information. ACI’s International Agreements with concrete-related associations that are committed to cooperation, coordination, and collaboration with other concrete-related societies is a critical step in the effort to develop a worldwide unified concrete community of equal partners.
