ACI 318 Translation Agreement with Vietnam

A delegation from Vietnam led by Dr. Le Quang Hung, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Construction, recently visited ACI Headquarters, which resulted in the signing of an agreement to translate the ACI 318 Building Code and several other ACI technical documents into Vietnamese.

Delegates met with ACI President Khaled Awad, Vice Presidents David Lange and Randall Poston, Past Presidents Michael Schneider and James Wight, and ACI Executive Vice President Ron Burg. Several organizations were represented including the Institute for Building Science and Technology, and Hanoi Architectural University.

Over the last three decades, Vietnam has grown rapidly and is now a major economic center in Southeast Asia. Accordingly, the production capacity of cement in Vietnam has increased significantly and approached approximately 76.3 million tonnes in 2015. Vietnam is currently the fifth largest consumer of cement in the world. As the country moves from a rural to an urban growth setting, and as demand for housing and infrastructure grows, cement consumption is expected to continue to rise.

Last year, ACI traveled to Vietnam for the Asian Concrete Federation Conference, and to sign Memorandums of Understanding with the Ministry of Construction, the Institute for Building Science and Technology, and the National University of Civil Engineering. Discussions centered around future educational opportunities, technical activities, document exchange, and mutual learning through cooperation.
