Gathering and sharing information on the development and application of concrete design standards throughout the Americas and beyond was the focus of the ACI International Workshop on Structural Concrete: Technology Advancement and Adoption in the Americas. The workshop took place on the first day of The Concrete Convention and Exposition, in Anaheim, CA, USA, October 14, 2017. Developed by ACI 318 Building Code Committee, the workshop convenes periodically to bring together international users of ACI 318 and other ACI documents. The workshop disseminates the latest developments and helps ACI understand how its standards and guidelines can better address the needs of its users. Participants at the prior workshops have included more than 100 experts from 21 countries. Sessions included: New Tools from ACI This session contained a series of presentations describing new reports and standards from ACI of particular interest to the international community, including new Spanish translations of ACI 301 Tolerances and ACI 117 IPS-1 Updated to ACI 318-14; ACI 318-14 Chapter 26 on Construction Documents and Inspection; and major updates expected for ACI 318-19. Non-Linear Analysis in Earthquake-Resistant Design Nonlinear analysis is increasingly used in the earthquake-resistant design of buildings. This session presented examples of the use of nonlinear analysis in the earthquake-resistant design of buildings in the United States and Chile, and included a presentation on the development of ACI 318-19 provisions for the use of nonlinear analysis methods. Seismic Design of Walls Structural walls are widely used as vertical and lateral-force-resisting elements throughout the world. Three presentations in this session covered the use of walls in three Latin-American countries (Chile, Colombia, and Mexico), followed by a presentation of how ACI 318 might accommodate these international applications. New News Structural concrete design is a continually advancing science. Three presentations discussed strut and tie modeling, advancements in adoption of high strength reinforcement use in ACI 318, and initial reports from Mexico City’s recent earthquake(s). An evening reception followed the workshop.
