Should You Reject the Load of Concrete after 90 Minutes? – this presentation provided insight into the latest research on extending the delivery of ready mixed concrete, and asked the question, “Is it time that these limits be relegated to the history books?” This presentation, and several more, were part of the Concrete Construction Symposium held at The Concrete Convention and Exposition, Anaheim, CA, USA, October 17, 2017. The four-part symposium honored Dr. Ward Malisch, ACI Honorary Member. The symposium presented information about the latest knowledge in concrete construction and materials, evaluated the appropriate use of specification information, and troubleshooting projects to resolve issues. In his presentation, “After Two Hundred Years of Estimating Evaporation, It is Still a Mystery,” Dr. Ken Hover, of Cornell University, and ACI Past President, stated that, “We can estimate the rate of evaporation of bleed-water through prediction of evaporation from water reservoirs. As the temperature of the water goes up, the pressure of the air will also increase. The worst case is when the concrete is warmer than the air.” Hover also went on to note that, “Ward has been a wonderful mentor throughout my storied ACI career. He guided me through what it takes to be a successful ACI member and how to achieve reward and satisfaction from ACI.” Other presentations included: The Un Shored Composite Slab on Metal Deck: Part III—Strategies for Producing Level Deflected Slabs Achieving Performance-Based Concrete Challenge for Contractor, Producer and Owner Leveraging 3-D Laser Scanning for Concrete Analysis Why Are As-Built Measurements Important?
