The American Concrete Institute hosted the ACI Concrete Essentials Seminar Series at the Big 5 Heavy Show in Dubai, UAE, March 26-27, 2018. The two-day seminar series gave attendees an in introduction to ACI and its mission to develop and disseminate concrete knowledge. Attendees were also able to have an in-depth look into topics including concrete repair, self-consolidating concrete, mass concrete, and concrete durability. Additionally, the seminar series featured a three-part course on the ACI Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete, which – under a recently-signed agreement with the Gulf Cooperation Council Standardization Organization – will be used to develop a Gulf Building Code. The Concrete Essentials Seminar Series, which took place during the inaugural Big 5 Heavy show, attracted more than 200 people over the two-day education program. Presented by Michael Tholen, PhD, PE; Khaled Nahlawi, PhD, PE; and Matthew D’Ambrosia, PhD, PE, attendees had the opportunity to ask these experts more in-depth questions about the presented topics and about ACI’s activities in the Middle East. The seminar series concluded with an evening reception for session attendees local ACI members. In addition to the presentation, ACI talked with Big 5 Heavy attendees in the exhibit hall about the Institute’s technical resources, membership opportunities, the ACI Collection of Concrete Codes, Specifications, and Practices, and ACI’s new Middle East web portal at www.concrete.org/MiddleEast. Big 5 Heavy organizes the show into five different sections - concrete, PMV, roadworks, mining, and building materials manufacturing. This show is the only dedicated platform for professionals involved in large- and small-scale construction and demolition projects in the Middle East that require heavy machinery, equipment, and concrete. Big 5 Heavy is planned for January 14-16, 2019, in Dubai, and ACI is planning on continuing its involvement. Partnering with The Big 5 Heavy is one of the ways ACI is establishing stronger relationships with organizations internationally. ACI maintains its relationship with the international concrete community through its participation in international events, its active and influential International Chapters, its collaboration with International Partners, and through its Ambassador Speaker Program.
