The American Concrete Institute has formed a new committee to develop and report information on the use of alternate cements in concrete. Chaired by Mary Christiansen, ACI committee 242, Alternative Cements, aims to develop a state-of-the-art report and ACI TechNotes on alternative cement technology, assemble case studies featuring alternative cements, define the distinction between alternative cements and alternative supplementary cementitious materials, develop a performance-based guide specification, and more. The new committee will build on work from ACI’s innovation task group focused on alternative cementitious materials, who recently authored ACI’s new ITG-10R: Practitioner's Guide for Alternative Cements. As performance and sustainability demands increase, owners, architects, and engineers are actively seeking alternatives to the use of portland cement for concrete. An alternative cement is intended to be a replacement for portland cement in some applications. In some cases, alternative cements may also be used in combination with portland or blended hydraulic cements. ITG-10R: Practitioner's Guide for Alternative Cements covers currently available and emerging alternative cements and is intended to provide information to help guide practitioners seeking to implement alternative cements. Additionally, the new ACI committee 242 will be holding a mini-session titled: “Recent Advances in Alternative Cements” at The Concrete Convention and Exposition, Las Vegas, NV, USA, October 14-18, 2018.
