In an effort to ensure proper concrete testing and support safe concrete construction practices, two new amendments to the Georgia Building Code now require ACI Certification. The first amendment states that only ACI-certified field technicians can sample and test fresh concrete in the field. The second amendment requires ACI Strength Testing Technician certification for individuals breaking cylinders in the lab. These amendments are the work of the Georgia Ready Mixed Concrete Association (GRMCA), whose members and Technical Activities committee successfully advocated for passage of these amendments to the Code. Prior to these changes, no direct qualification requirements existed in the Code for personnel testing fresh and hardened concrete. In an interview given to Concrete Construction, GRMCA Executive Director Jimmy Cotty said, “ACI certification programs are internationally recognized, and GRMCA felt it was critical to specifically acknowledge them in the code. When [TAC chairman Vance Robinson] and I met with our State Codes Advisory Committee,” Cotty continued, “we took the position that demonstrating competency was achieved by passing the relevant ACI certifications. These certifications are industry standard and recognized by all.” ACI certification programs are specified in many other places. To view a full list, visit www.whyacicertification.org.
