An overview of growth patterns and development of the Las Vegas Valley was explored in a session titled “Build, Implode, Repeat!” during Contractors’ Day at The Concrete Convention and Exposition, Las Vegas, NV, USA, October16, 2018. Discussion centered on the more recent explosive growth and redevelopment of the area with an emphasis on construction and demolition of unique major facilities. Following the morning sessions, the Contractors’ Day Lunch featured a presentation titled, “The Las Vegas Stadium—The Newest Vegas Icon.” Paul Dudzinski, of Mortenson McCarthy Joint Venture, shared details on the construction of the newest addition to the Las Vegas skyline, the Las Vegas Stadium—future home of the NFL Raiders franchise. Dudzinski provided a project overview, shared the architect’s design inspiration, highlighted one-of-a-kind design elements, and discussed unique aspects of building in the desert. He also explained how virtual reality is being used in the project for everything from planning construction to the sale of the stadium suites. At approximately $550 million, the NEON project is also the Nevada Department of Transportation’s (NDOT) largest contract to date. The major elements of the NEON project are generally categorized into: a) the HOV system; b) the Charleston Interchange reconstruction; c) the I 15 Freeway reconstruction; d) the US 95 reconstruction; e) Grand Central Industrial Connector; f) local street connections; and g) ancillary improvements.
