International cooperation resulted in success for a new Concrete Field Testing Technician certification program based on British Standards/European Norms (BS/EN). ACI partnered with the Institute of Concrete Technology (ICT) in preparing industry representatives from England and Ireland, so the program can be offered to the concrete industry in the UK. ACI certification training in Warrington, UK, from left: Michael Morrison (ACI), Les Street (CEMEX), Bryan Magee (University of Ulster), Raman Mangabhai (ICT, President), Ashley Goodman (Tarmac), Paul Cushley (Low Grange Quarry), Robert Lewis (ICT-Ferroglobe), Marcin Zarzeczanski (CET) , Colin Price, (GCPAT), Gareth David (ICT-Tempra), Antony Hegarty (GCPAT, host), and Josh Lee (Tarmac) Michael Morrison, ACI Manager of Certification Program Development, and John Nehasil, Managing Director of Certification, traveled to the UK in September 2018 to conduct an administrative development session/orientation and certification for ICT in preparation of the program’s launch anticipated for late 2018. The 2-day program, hosted by GCP Applied Technologies in Warrington, UK, featured administrative and technical instruction, hands-on practice, and administration of the BS/EN-based written and performance examinations. This new Concrete Field Testing Technician Certification offered through ICT is based on the following BS/EN standards: 12350 Testing Fresh Concrete - Part 1: Sampling, Part 2: Slump-test, Part 5: Flow Table Test, Part 6: Density, Part 7: Air Content - Pressure Methods, Part 8: Self-Compacting Concrete - Slump-Flow Test; and 12390 Testing Hardened Concrete - Part 2: Making and Curing Specimens for Strength Tests. ACI Certification staff are now in the process of making final edits to core program documents and tools to aid in the administration of this program. Discussions are already underway between ACI and ICT regarding the next steps needed to promote and strengthen program acceptance throughout the UK and other regions that may benefit from using the program.
