The American Concrete Institute has submitted multiple code change proposals to reference ACI standards in the model building codes developed by the International Code Council (ICC). Proposals will be considered during the ICC Committee Action Hearings to be held in Albuquerque, NM, USA, April 28 – May 8, 2019. ACI proposals to the International Building Code include new references to: ACI 117-10 (2015): Specification for Tolerances for Concrete Construction and Materials; ACI 311.6-18: Specification for Testing Ready-Mixed Concrete; ACI 311.7-18: Specification for Inspection of Concrete Construction; ACI 550.5-18: Code Requirements for the Design of Precast Concrete Diaphragms for Earthquake Motions; and ITG-7-09: Specification for Tolerances for Precast Concrete There is also a proposed update to reference ACI 318-19: Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete and Commentary. ACI 318-19 is expected to be published in June 2019. Another proposal adds ACI 562-19: Code Requirements for Assessment, Repair, and Rehabilitation of Existing Concrete Structures as a reference in the International Existing Building Code. Other proposals are intended to clarify the code and to remove provisions addressing design and construction of structural concrete that is also addressed in ACI 318. The ACI proposals are posted here. To specifically address adoption of its standards, ACI’s mission statement was recently updated to read: “ACI is a leading authority and resource worldwide for the development, dissemination, and adoption of its consensus-based standards, technical resources, educational programs, and proven expertise for individuals and organizations involved in concrete design, construction, and materials, who share a commitment to pursuing the best use of concrete.” ACI is seeking additional supporters to help advance these proposals with local building code departments and code officials participating in the Albuquerque hearings.
