ACI has submitted a code change proposal, 7840, that would add a reference to ACI 562-19 Code Requirements for Evaluation, Repair, and Rehabilitation of Concrete Structures to the existing building requirements of the 2021 Edition of the Florida Building Code. The proposal will be heard during the Structural Technical Advisory Committee hearing to be held on July 10, 2019 at the Hilton University of Florida Convention Center, 1714 SW 34th Street, Gainesville, FL. Download Code Change Proposal Outreach to local code officials on the importance of the adoption of ACI 562 for the benefit of the citizens of Florida is an important part of the process. Local code officials, especially those that will attend the hearings, may voice their opinions regarding adoption. ACI 562 serves the citizens of Florida by providing the designer, owner, contractor, materials providers, building code official and the public: A level of expectation of life safety to the public in buildings where repairs or rehabilitation is Performed on concrete structural elements; Clearly defined, uniform requirements aimed at extending the service life of existing structures; Minimum requirements for efficiency, safety, and quality of concrete repair; Clear communication of responsibilities between owners, designers, and contractors; Means for building code officials to evaluate rehabilitation designs; Specific repair requirements that often result in less costly repairs compared to requiring compliance with provisions for new construction requirements; and Increased confidence in performance of repairs that support the more sustainable approach compared to demolish and rebuild. Further, this proposal is especially important in Florida where the effects of salt air and salt water can be severely deleterious to the longevity of reinforced concrete exposed to the elements. Support adoption of ACI 562 in the 2021 Edition of the Florida Building Code as a mechanism for building officials to have increased confidence that evaluations, repairs and rehabilitation are performed in a manner that provides an acceptable level of protection for the citizens of Florida. When contacting local building officials, please provide their contact information to Kerry.Sutton@concrete.org or Steve.Szoke@concrete.org so that we may assist in any questions they may have. Actions to foster support for adoption of ACI 562-19 in Florida is consistent with the revised mission of ACI that now includes adoption of technical documents. The change in the mission was to clearly identify that the most important aspect of ACI code development activities is not to simply have the work of dedicated committee members available to the public, but to help assure that the public benefits from these important design and construction requirements.
