Technology to resolve corrosion through composite reinforcement The American Concrete Institute (ACI) will host a hot-topic discussion titled: “Do We Have a Sustainable and Scalable Material to Address Carbon Steel Corrosion Once and for All?” at the upcoming ACI Concrete Convention. Held October 20-24, 2019, at the at the Duke Energy Convention Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, the featured discussion will occur on Sunday, October 20 from 8:00-10:00 p.m. To address the corrosion of carbon steel reinforcement in concrete, the current state of practice includes using admixtures or supplemental binders in concrete mixtures, increasing the cover or surface protection by membranes, coating carbon steel with epoxy, and replacing carbon steel with more corrosion-resistant alloys. The purpose of this hot-topic session is to show practitioners, researchers and students the availability of composite reinforcement that -- rather than delaying the corrosion problem -- totally resolves corrosion of reinforcement with a material system (i.e., glass fiber reinforced polymer) that is validated, included in standards, and readily available. Attendees to this discussion will understand the motivation and challenges of a bridge owner in deploying this new technology aimed at providing a longer service life while minimizing maintenance costs. The discussion will be moderated by ACI Fellow Antonio Nanni, PhD, PE, University of Miami; and include speakers Patrick McColley, PE, SI, Ohio Department of Transportation; Richard F. Bertz, PE, Mannik & Smith Group Inc.; and John Myers, PhD, PE, Missouri University of Science and Technology. A networking session sponsored by Owens Corning will take place immediately following the discussion at 9:00 p.m. A second hot-topic discussion on the topic of innovation and technology in the construction and design industry will be held at the same time. Attendance at both hot-topic discussions is available at no cost to all registered ACI Concrete Convention attendees.
