The American Concrete Institute has developed two certification programs aimed at improving the quality of concrete masonry materials and construction. The programs were created to qualify technicians and improve quality assurance and testing of masonry products. The Masonry Field Testing Technician certification is earned by individuals who have demonstrated the knowledge and ability to perform sample preparation and testing of masonry construction-related materials in the field. A Masonry Laboratory Testing Technician is an individual who has demonstrated the knowledge and ability to perform laboratory procedures required for preparation and testing of masonry construction-related materials. “The Masonry industry identified a need for a certification program to properly qualify individuals to correctly perform testing of masonry materials,” said Michael Morrison, Manager, Certification Program Development, American Concrete Institute. “They approached ACI and were key contributors in the development of these two programs as a mechanism to address the crucial improvement of quality assurance and testing of masonry products,” he said. The importance of these Masonry testing programs is highlighted in the November Issue of Structure Magazine. An article by Nick Lang, Vice President, National Concrete Masonry Association, touches on why masonry testing is necessary; the scope of the Masonry Field Testing Technician and Masonry Laboratory Testing Technician programs; how the programs were developed; and steps to becoming certified. Check out the full article here. “ACI encourages requiring certified masonry testing technicians on all masonry construction projects as qualified, certified technicians ensure proper testing will be performed,” continued Morrison. Both programs require a passing grade on a written examination and successful completion of a performance examination.
