L to R: Dr. Jerzy Zemajtis, ACI President Jeffrey Coleman, Prof. Rami Abboud and Dr. Nariman Khalil The University of Balamand student chapter hosted two webinars in 2020. “ACI 318-19: Changes to the Concrete Design Standard,” was presented on August 13, 2020, by Gregory Zeisler, ACI Senior Engineer. The webinar, organized in collaboration with ACI Lebanon Chapter, included a welcome by Khaled Awad, ACI Past President. The webinar explained the changes to the requirements for structural concrete to allow higher reinforcement grades; identified the changes to the development lengths and the new requirements for post-installed screw type anchors; and described the changes to shear design provisions and equations. Moderated by chapter advisor Dr. Nariman Khalil, the event attracted more than 80 participants. “Concrete Cracking” was presented on November 12, 2020, by Dr. Jerzy Zemajtis, ACI Senior Engineer. The webinar included a welcome by ACI President Jeffrey W. Coleman and explained the causes of concrete cracking and their mechanisms in fresh and hardened concretes and various evaluation and repair techniques.
