During last year’s Virtual Concrete Convention, ACI President Jeffrey W. Coleman, announced a challenge to raise $1 million as part of the ACI Foundation’s annual appeal. Coleman wanted to help increase awareness and visibility for the ACI Foundation and familiarize members with the many programs they offer including scholarships, research grants, and the Strategic Development Council (SDC). Throughout the last month, Coleman has met virtually with over 25 local chapters across the United States and Canada to discuss his initiative, learn more about each chapter, and how they were impacted by the pandemic. Coleman also learned that many of the chapters already fund their own scholarships or fellowships for their local members using their own resources. These meetings allowed Coleman to provide information on how chapters can utilize the ACI Foundation to create a scholarship or fellowship for their local students at a national level. Chapters can set the criteria for their scholarship or fellowship and work with ACI Foundation to promote, recruit, and select recipients. As a result of these meetings, several chapters decided to create a scholarship or fellowship with the ACI Foundation. These chapters include the ACI Ontario Chapter, ACI New Jersey Chapter, ACI Georgia Chapter, ACI Louisiana Chapter, and ACI Carolinas Chapter. When asked what made him decide to create a scholarship with the ACI Foundation, ACI New Jersey Chapter President Ed Panuska said, “The NJ Chapter ACI is very excited to create this Fellowship with the ACI Foundation. It will provide additional educational opportunities to students studying within the concrete industry while lessening the financial burdens that come with higher education. We strongly believe in supporting, advancing, and promoting the concrete industry hand in hand with the students who have chosen careers within it.” Visit acifoundation.org if you are interested in learning more about the ACI Foundation or would like to create a scholarship or fellowship for your chapter.
