Gathering and sharing information on the development and application of concrete design standards throughout the Americas and beyond was the focus of the ACI International Workshop on Structural Concrete. The workshop took place on the first day of the ACI Concrete Convention, in New Orleans, LA, USA, March 24-28, 2024. Developed by ACI 318 Building Code Committee, the workshop convenes periodically to bring together international users of ACI 318 and other ACI documents. The workshop disseminates the latest developments and helps ACI understand how its standards and guidelines can better address the needs of its users. Sessions included: Sustainability Geared toward all stakeholders, researchers, and students in the concrete industry, this session focused on new materials and technologies to reduce carbon emissions in the cement and concrete industry, ACI 323 Low-Carbon Concrete code development efforts, and novel approaches to achieve low-embodied carbon concrete and concrete materials. Katrina Infrastructure Rebuild This session was an exploration of some of the failures that caused destruction to the City of New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and the lessons learned going forward in protecting the city’s infrastructure. International Projects This three-part session was dedicated to enhancing building resilience and safety through innovative materials and adherence to international codes, including the use of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) for strengthening, the importance of resilient infrastructure, and challenges of constructing high-rise concrete towers in the absence of official building codes and local expertise. Updates to ACI 318 The status of the ACI 318-25 Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete was the focus of this session which included a general overview of the status of the forthcoming code, review of code update activities the committee has been working on since the previous edition, and more. Following the full-day sessions, an evening reception took place featuring a special poster session including the work of six early career practicing engineers.
