The ACI Georgia Chapter held its second annual young member flagship event on September 25, 2024, in downtown Atlanta, GA, USA. The event featured a project case study of The HENRY, a premium housing development designed to play a critical role in the area’s growing entertainment district. The HENRY pays tribute to the late Henry Aaron, an Atlanta Braves baseball legend, who held the home run record for decades. Thirty-one young professionals representing eight various engineering and construction firms in Georgia participated in the event. Attendees from Georgia Tech’s ACI student chapter were also present. Attendees were engaged in a case-study presentation by key members of the design and construction team: Caitlin McCealy from ARGOS (concrete supplier), Nicholas Ruzicka from JE DUNN (general contractor), and Nathan Blong from UZUN + CASE (structural engineer). The three-part case study was followed by a Q&A discussion. Additionally, a site walk and young professional networking event at the Braves vs. Mets baseball game was planned, but unfortunately cancelled due to the weather. The Henry is a 20 story “L” shaped residential tower that sits over a 9-story rectangular parking podium. The case study presentation from Argos, JE Dunn, and Uzun+Case focused on the design and redesign of an underground storm vault that was required to drain the site of an existing pond before construction of the tower can commence. The design and construction of the vault was a collaborative and iterative effort between structural engineer, contractor, and concrete supplier. The ACI Georgia Chapter Young Professional Committee led by Will Shirley, PES Structural Engineers and Griffin Fish, UZUN + Case, is committed to providing professional development and networking opportunities for the next generation of concrete industry professionals, age 30 and younger. The Student and Young Professional Activities Committee (SYPAC) and the Chapter Activities Committee (CAC) supports established the Local Chapter Young Member Outreach Committee, a subcommittee designed to assist local chapter officers with exchanging ideas and best practices on retaining student members and engaging with young professionals.
