Abstract:
The paper emphasizes the need to determine the physical and geometrical data of the reinforcement as well as the dimensions and strength of the concrete used in a structure before any reasonable estimate of strength or deformation characteristics can be made. A rich variety of patented reinforcing systems were used in early reinforced concrete bridges and buildings. A selection of a number of these systems is presented together with a bibliography of many of the most popular or unique systems. The approach to the evaluation of early reinforced concrete systems is given by means of a brief case history of a 1902 patented reinforced concrete floor system.
