Abstract:
I am familiar with the term “nominal” when used in reference to aggregate size as in “maximum nominal aggregate size.” But, I’m confused by the use of this term in what seem to be conflicting requirements for slump on a project for which we’re supplying the concrete. Section 3300 of the specifications for 4000 psi (27 MPa) air-entrained concrete indicates a 4-in.-maximum (100 mm) slump, but a note on the blueprints for a wall to be placed using 4000 psi (27 MPa) air-entrained concrete on the same project indicates a 4-in.-nominal (100 mm) slump. I know that a 4-in.-maximum slump means just that—a 4 in. maximum with no allowance for anything over 4 in. Does 4-in.-nominal slump indicate something other than a 4 in. maximum? I can find no reference to “nominal slump” in ACI documents.
