Abstract:
Even though nonparticipating frames aren’t designed to resist lateral forces, it’s critical that lateral drift doesn’t lead to brittle punching shear failures at slab-column connections. Among other alternatives, ACI 318-05 Section 21.11 provides limits on design story drift ratio above which shear reinforcement is required in the slab. These limits were partly based on a database of conventionally reinforced slab tests. A database of post-tensioned flat plate test results is presented that shows these limits are conservative and validates proposed increased drift limits for post-tensioned flat plat slabs.
