Abstract:
Chapter 22 of the ACI 318-19 Code requires determination of the neutral axis depth before calculating the nominal shear strength at a section. However, the location of the neutral axis will vary with axial force and moment at a section. Thus, identical columns in a structure may have different depth values, leading to unnecessary complexity in building design. This article presents a procedure that simplifies the shear strength determination for reinforced concrete columns by eliminating the need to calculate the neutral axis depth.
