Abstract:
The development of concrete that can be compacted into every corner of a formwork by means of its own weight and without vibration is reviewed. The aggregate characteristics and the mix proportions for this type of concrete have been refined through experimentation to achieve the flowability needed. This research was conducted in university laboratories in cooperation with the construction industry in Japan. Some projects using self-compacting concrete are discussed. This material was presented as the Ferguson lecture at the 1996 Fall ACI convention.
