Abstract:
Mineral admixtures include finely divided materials that fall into four types: (a) cementitious, (b) pozzolan-ic, (c) both cementitious and pozzolanic, and (d) nominally inert chemically. History and current knowledge of the use of granulated blast furnace slag, natural pozzolans (raw and calcined) and fly ash as mineral admixtures for concrete are briefly covered. A promising future is envisioned for the extended use of these products as a portion of the cementitious binder, a portion of the fine aggregate., or as both cementitious and fine aggregate materials to secure improved performance of concrete and economies in materials cost and energy consumption.
