Abstract:
A number of #4 Grade 60 reinforcing bars were heated to temperatures of 932 to 1475 F (500 to 802 C) and then slowly cooled in a furnanace, simulating one possible exposure condition in a severe fire. The bars were tested in tension after they had cooled. The yield stresses were reduced to a minimum of 73 percent of the original strength, and the ultimate strenghts were reduced to a minimum of 83 percent of the as-rolled strength. Data shuch as this is needed by the engineer faced with the evaluation of a structure which has been damaged bya sever fire, and the currently available information is incomplete and sometimes contradictory.
