Abstract:

The paper describes the structural details to be incorporated in ultra high rise buildings to avoid distress from differential distortions resulting from temperature differences between exterior and interior columns. Also distresses from differential creep and shrinkage between vertical load bearing elements due to their variances in reinforcement and size can be minimized through proper structural design and detailing. Partitions detailed with sliding joints around their periphery are not strained when the fram distorts. Also the cladding should be detailed to undergo temperature length changes without stress buildup.

Abstract:

A simple length limitation is insufficient to take into account the temperature and shrinkage effects on a reinforced concrete structure. After analyzing 98 typical one story frames in a computer, an equation was arrived at, to determine the maximum allowable length of on story reinforced concrete structures as a function of the length and rigidity of the members and the thermal variation in the location.

Abstract:

The effect of temperature changes on the reinforced concrete frame of a long, two and four story, bakery structure is analyzed, and the practical solution is presented. At the time of design, computer analyses were not yet easily available and calculations were performed manually. After nine years in service, the structure performs as specified.

Abstract:

A summary of the papers presented in the symposium on Designing for Effects of Creep, Shrinkage, and Temperature, including: (a) the problem; (b) living with the problem; (c) data required; (d) a choice of design approach; (e) some specific recommendations. Having recognized the problem, the purpose of this symposium is to provide guidance for designers. The papers submitted suggest that there are two available approaches: 1. Design so as to avoid the problem; 2. Learn to live with it.

Abstract:

Discusses actual distress conditions caused by the neglect of axial volume changes for different types of concrete structures. Basic data on creep, shrinkage and temperature change are presented for engineering design. A procedure is given for determinging the magnitude of axially restrained volume change foces in concrete structures.
